What is Capoeira?

Capoeira is an ancient martial art created by African and Brazilian people long ago. It is a rich blend of body expression, fight, dance, music, and movement. Capoeira is steeped in history and culture, much of which was passed down from generation to generation through stories and songs.
Capoeira practioners say that it is a mirror to life. Challenges faced in life are faced in roda. Lessons learned in life are reflected in the jogo. (game). As one grows in capoeira, ones grows in life. As one grows in life, one grows in capoeira.

About Our School

Capoeira Mandinga Detroit was established in 1998 under the supervision of Mestre Marcelo Caverinha. Our school believes strongly in community and unlimited possibility through creativity and body expression. We celebrate capoeira and wish to share it with everyone. We work with everyone who wants to participate in this ancient martial art with us. We sing. We dance. We learn. We play. We work hard and we have fun. Capoeira is for everyone and we encourage everyone to come play capoeira with us!

Our Teacher

Instrutora Sabiá is our teacher and the director of the Capoeira Mandinga Detroit academy. She has been training capoeira under the supervision of Mestre Marcelo for over 12 years and teaching for 8 years. Sabiá willingly assumed the role of head instructor of her schoool and co-director of Capoeira Mandinga Michigan when the previous teacher retired in 2013. In her time studying capoeira, Sabiá has lead workshops at national martials training camps, held lectures at universities and taught capoeira classes across the country.

Our Mestre

Mestre Marcelo Caverinha is our capoeira master and the founder of Capoeira Mandinga. In 1984, Mestre Marcelo left Brazil and settled in the United States, bringing with him the rich art-form of capoeira; at that time he was one of only three people teaching in the US. Since then Mestre Marcelo’s Oakland, California-based school branched out throughout the US and the world. Capoeira Mandinga academies can be found in New Zealand, Israel, China, Taiwan, Japan and of course Brazil.
